CAÑO NEGRO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Caño Negro Mixed National Wildlife Refuge is one of Costa Rica’s most important wetland areas. It is located in the northern region, near Los Chiles, and protects lagoons, marshes, channels, flooded forest and the Frío River. It is especially known for birdwatching, with more than 300 recorded bird species, including aquatic, migratory and resident birds.

Daily: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

CRMaps Tip:
This is one of the best birdwatching areas in the country. The experience is usually best enjoyed on a boat tour along the Frío River or the wetland channels. Bring binoculars, insect repellent, sunscreen, water and a camera. Dry season is often very good for seeing large bird concentrations.
